When a scene changes

I was watching Inglorious Basterds recently and the opening scene is just brilliant.

There is something so terrifying about a scene that lulls you into a false sense of security and then all of a sudden changes and becomes extremely tense.

There is a moment where the conversation is slowing, and the camera slowly rotates around with the characters now occupying opposite sides of the screen. A very subtle piece of directing that indicates the scene is about to change.

All of a sudden the tension on this polite conversation is turned up at a rate of knots. It’s captivating and I think a lot more effective than had the scene been tense throughout.

Also Christoph Waltz is just amazing in this movie!
