I went to see Bohemian Rhapsody recently and as the opening credits rolled I thought to myself:
“Oh I didn’t know Mike Myers was in this.”
But then the movie started and I forgot about it.
Then we were introduced to him, and even though he was under heavy make up it was undeniably him.
“Oh look there’s Mike! What is mike Myers doing in a movie like this? This is such an odd role for him.”
Then the story goes away and then it comes back to him, as he gives Queen his reaction to the song Bohemian Rhapsody. To summarize it quickly he’s not happy with it. He thinks it makes no sense and it terrible.
At one point he says something along the lines of… teenagers will not bang their heads to this in their cars!
I thought to myself that’s a weird thing for you to say. Why would you say that Mike?
And then it hit me
Oh shit!
Oh shit!
That’s unreal! What a gem of a reference!
I love it.
For me it was the subtlety of the reference that made it so exciting. I was blindsided by it and many others didn’t notice it.
In my experience it added to the film because I got the pleasure of pointing out the reference to those who saw the movie and missed it.
That moment became my favourite part of the movie.
It’s a line that fits with the scene but it comes up on your radar because you think that’s an odd thing for someone to say.
It’s a little private joke between those in the know. A targeted moment from filmmaker to film lovers
