The force awakens screenplay was great for subtly building the mystery around Rey’s character. First of all we were very curious as to these new star wars characters but the script made us especially curious about Rey.
You see Finn’s story straight away, you know his past and where he came from. Whether as with Rey, you know nothing about her and the movie builds your curiosity brilliantly.
First of all when questioned she says she’s a nobody, which straight away makes us more suspicious.
‘What girl?’
Kylo Ren who was already pissed off finds a new level of anger, when hearing BB8 escapes in the company of a girl. His reaction is suspicious to say the least, as why would he react to something as small as the mention of a girl. He must know about Rey and there must be something special about her.
‘Who’s the girl?’.
After Rey has left the table Moz queries Han about Rey. At this point, it firmly puts the question in our head. Who is this girl?
These are just some of the techniques employed by the ‘The Force Awakens’s screenplay to build the mystery around Rey throughout the movie.
What’s great is the variation of the same question. You see the same question being packaged in different ways and thrown out from different standpoints so it feels like a lot of people are talking about her. Even if you weren’t a keen star wars fan and this was your first movie you’d start to become curious about Rey and her past.
It’s no wonder that following the movie the internet exploded with theories about Rey’s heritage.
