Cheering on the opposition

As a youngster I used to love it when our opponents’ best player went off injured.

‘Our chances of winning have just increased ten fold!’ I’d think to myself.

But the Inner Game of Tennis describes a different attitude towards opposition performance.

W. Timothy Gallwey encourages you to be excited about taking on a full strength squad.

You should be hoping that your opposition has a great game.

After all it’s the games where we have to rise to the seemingly insurmountable challenge that we find surprising new levels of performance.

‘I didn’t know I was capable of a curving crossfield kick until the hardest game of the year forced me to do it’

If third gear is all that’s required to beat everyone 100 nil you’ll never reach fifth gear and I believe the human race doesn’t play sports for dominance, we love a challenge.

We crave fifth gear.
