In the above YouTube video, at around 1 minute 30 seconds, Simon Pegg talks about Steven Spielberg problem solving a scene and I think it’s a fantastic example of imagination and practicality fused together.
The imagination part is easy for Spielberg, he can see the scene in his head, he knows what he wants to do.
The tricky part, and one of the reasons he is one of the best, is that he found a way to make his dream a reality with the technical limitations he had.
Spielberg knew that if he wanted viewers to see what he could see, he had to translate it into film. The audience was not going to be able to plug into his head and watch the scene from his brain.
He also didn’t give up on the idea and resort to just shooting it straight.
He leaned into the problem and found a solution.
It’s one thing to have the idea but another thing entirely to make it a reality.
