I think one of the key distinctions between artists and the rest of the world is the level of observation.
For example if I were to hang out with my friend Dave as a marketer. My observations would be extremely basic – That is Dave. He is there on the couch.
But if I were tasked with playing Dave in a film, I think I would observe him very differently.
In fact, with that goal in mind, I think anyone would naturally start to scrutinize Dave’s mannerisms and make observations like:
When he smiles, he doesn’t smile with his whole face, he does this little half smirk.
Or
He gesticulates so much, it’s like every word gets its own hand movement.
The same mindset is adopted by the author who wants to accurately portray a country club. She needs to capture the small details that will paint a picture in the reader’s head.
The same is true for the songwriter who wants to make a comment on society. First she needs to observe society.
The stand up comedian brings unexpected joy when he highlights a peculiar behaviour you never questioned before.
I reckon they see differently and if observation is the secret skill to their success well then that’s great news because everyone can practice that!
