Observationsandjudgements merged

When I analyse the misconceptions and assumptions that have got me in trouble, I often find the root cause to be the merging of observations and judgements.

For example I observe alcoholic Al at the bar, card in hand and immediately judge him to be indulging his destructive tendencies.

I then get annoyed, confront Al, tell him he’s ruining his life only for the bar man to arrive with a packet of crisps and Al to tell me he’s a month sober.

Cue eternal torment regarding this mortification and mental note to locate and sever connection between observations and judgements.

Just because alcoholic Al is at the bar does not mean he’ll be chugging tequila all night. It just means he’s at the bar. There are an infinite amount of reasons he could be there.

No thank you judgement, we do not require your assistance!
