In 2013 Matt Le Tissier was inducted into the English Football Hall of Fame.
For those who don’t know who that is.
Le Tissier was a great player who played his entire career for Southampton (a low level never win anything club).
Could he have made it at the bigger clubs?
100%!
In fact numerous times Chelsea, Man United, and Tottenham all came calling, wagging a big fat salary in his face but all failed to lure him away from Southampton.
It’s a story you don’t hear often in sports.
The typical vignette these days is – a player proves themselves to be a precocious talent and then hops from club to club following the money for the rest of their career.
We can see a parallel with Billy Beane turning down big money to leave the Oakland A’s for the Boston Red Sox because he couldn’t give up on the dream of winning the world series with the Oakland A’s (a small club with an even smaller budget).
In Beane’s eyes staying and trying to win the last game of the season with his favourite club was more special than becoming the richest General Manager in baseball history.
