In a particularly jarring episode of the US office Gabe shows the rest of the staff his short film following the rules of ‘The cinema of the unsettling’.
What follows is a random selection of disturbing visuals.
After enough had been shown one staff member cries out ‘Is there even a story?’
To which Gabe replies:
“Yep it seems like there isn’t a narrative, maybe the filmmaker realised even narrative is comforting”
Which brings me on to the topic of templates.
If you are a creative who wants to get better there are frameworks in every art form that all the greats follow.
In story telling there are templates such as the heros journey or the three act structure.
In music making there is the middle 8 which is used to break up the repetition of verse and chorus.
Whatever art form you create in, I encourage you to find the templates, master them and then push their boundaries because that’s when it’s going to get really interesting!
Hope that helps!
