The coach can’t play the game for the team so therefore I think the role of the coach is to prepare their team as best they can.
They place weapons in the players arsenal for them to use however and whenever they feel necessary.
The need to react instantly within the timeframe of a game means the coach has to anticipate problems, find potential solutions and train their teams how to enact those solutions at a moment’s notice.
