Hourly reports

The young manager didn’t have a firm grasp on what his team was doing all the time.

So, he told them they would have to submit to him hourly reports on their activity.

He clapped his hands with glee.

Now he was finally going to get to the bottom of what they were doing all day.

Cut to two days later and our young manager is worn out.

The hourly reports overwhelmed him immediately and he hasn’t come back up for air since.

What’s more is that his team is getting less done because they’re reporting so often.

I think the urge for more scrutiny is tempting but ultimately detrimental.

Micromanaging is a drain on time and morale.

I think a much better option is to effectively communicate the direction and trust that the team will find their way

I imagine this suggestion will go down like a lead balloon to those considering micromanaging because of all the uncertainty it comes with.

But I think when the pressure is on it’s healthier to become comfortable with the possibility of failure than stand over people directing their every move.
