Self aware comedian

I think some of the best comedians are those that are self aware.

They realise how the audience views them and they tell jokes that align with that view.

It would feel disingenuous if Ricky Gervais were to tell a story about his life as a minority because we can see, and know him to be, a straight white male.

Therefore, not only would it get less laughs but it would feel weird too.

Now if he were to make jokes about fame going to his head and his inner miserable old man coming out in politically incorrect ways, I would laugh at that, because it feels true to me.
