There are some reactions that are genuine and there are some reactions that you have to take with a pinch of salt.
Namely, the exclamations post feeling insecure.
They felt under attack or put on the spot.
They think the group are making them out to be weird and so they react stronger than usual to someone else’s potential insecurity.
They are vehemently enacting the philosophy that attack is the best form of defense.
So, you can take these expressions with a pinch of salt because there is hurt behind them.
