There’s oversharing and then there’s being a tight lipped mute under interrogation and between these two extremes I believe is the key to talking about your personal life at work.
None of your colleagues want to be subjected to a rant about your failing marriage but at the same time it’s nearly impossible to create a lasting bond over work projects alone.
Discovering a mutual love for David Bowie or finding out you are both parents gives you a fighting chance at a friendship (even if it’s just a temporary one).
So, I think it’s important to strike that balance and reveal enough about yourself to open a window of opportunity for a personal connection.
