I think the trap of people working in silos happens for 3 reasons:
1) Narrow focus – ‘My job is buttons. I go in, I button, I go home. I don’t know what anyone else does, I just button’
2) Lack of caring – ‘I realise my job could overlap with others but I don’t give a shit. It’s not in my job description therefore it’s not my problem’
3) Social awkwardness – ‘I understand that what I’m doing could help a colleague but what if they react badly? What if they think I’m telling them how to do their job? Come to think of it we don’t really know each other that well, I’m sure they’ll be fine without it.’
And so, Gimli goes on a wild goose chase across the company searching for someone who can help with his issue only to find out it’s the person he silently sits next to everyday.
