Life is short

Life is short.

This phrase often comes loaded with guilt about sitting around and doing nothing.

‘That’s such a waste, you have to go out and have an adventure!’

Now, what are some characteristics of adventures?

Uncertainty and complexity.

So, according to ‘life is short’ we need to be seeking out these qualities in our precious free time

But what ‘life is short’ doesn’t take into account is that we can’t move for uncertainty and complexity right now.

It’s become the norm.

Experts couldn’t confirm if 2023 was a recession or not but the tech industry alone let off over 200,000 people, wars are being declared and carrying on for far too long, gender norms are being questioned, pandemics arrive out of nowhere turn the world upside down and disappear in an instant.

Social standings are more and more fragile as so much happens online.

Celebrities can be cancelled any second for the tiniest of slip ups.

Friends can cancel at any moment if they find something better to do and ghosting has been added to the dictionary.

So, maybe doing nothing shouldn’t be labelled lazy anymore, maybe it’s the cure.
