Palace’s normalcy

With the end of the world looming in the ‘Last Policeman’ sci-fi series the majority of the global population commit suicide, take drugs, leave their partners for orgies in Vegas etc etc.

Except for the hero of the books.

Henry ‘Hank’ Palace who methodically works to find resolutions to his cases while constantly being confronted with the questions:

Why?

Why bother trying?

Why do you care?

Why are you being selfless when you have the perfect excuse to be selfish?

And I think the metaphor for Palace’s normalcy in the face of Armageddon is the reminder that we never know when it’s all going to end.

Our lives could end in the next hour and we would not be guaranteed a warning.

And with limited time on this earth Hank derives the most satisfaction not from drugs or sex but from solving a challenging problem that helps people.
