Me thinks the parakeet was used as a ploy for attention.
Why?
Because firstly small talk was not allowed to commence until the owner found the bird.
And secondly, when conversation ran an alternative course the owner kept trying to bring it back to the pet.
‘Oh what have you got there you clever boy!’
I don’t think humans ever stop craving attention.
