Ubiquitous uno

When presenting to my sports team I was going to liken an approach to tag rugby with an approach to Uno.

You have some cards, you get to use them to decide the course of the game but ultimately you are victim to the other players agendas too.

Therefore winning is a combination of a small bit of skill and a huge dollop of  luck.

And what’s funny is that in Uno, we smile, laugh and make exaggerated cartoonish exclamations of frustration when someone switches  the colour to something disagreeable.

But really underneath it all we’re delighted at the unpredictability.

That’s where the fun is.

And when it comes off. When your last card matches the card on the top of the pile, you squeal with delight as you know how lucky you are to come to this winning ending.

For some reason or other that approach isn’t adopted in sports or in life in general.

We’re too busy down playing chance and overestimating our ability to control the future.
