The subtext said it all

Dennis: Hey Mike, can I have a cigar?

Michael: Yeah

Michael fetches the cigar.

Michael: Here you go.

To read that, it would be understandable to think that a was very boring scene about a simple cigar request but the subtext is saying so much more.

I think it’s quite a sad thing, as an adult to use subtext to tell someone something.

I think if it’s delivering bad news it’s a form of kindness as we hope the subtext will tell the full story and soften the blow of the harsh reality.

And if it’s a way to confess, it’s a sign of a lack of bravery and we hope the subtext can be more honest than we can be right now.
