The lions squad selection is arguably the most dramatised spectacle in rugby.
The public and the players are all finding out at the same time.
I’d say less than 10 people know beforehand.
They sell tickets to the unveiling, they stream it live, they deliberately stall the announcement with faff for maximum tension.
You don’t get that with other squad selections.
When Ireland pick their training squad for the six nations, the list is emailed to the press.
When a team is picked for a match, the players will find out behind closed doors before the press does.
But with the lions announcement there is a flare to it that is largely absent in the rest of the sport.
