Youth is wasted on the young

A 13 year old boy and a 33 year old man are watching a TV show together.

It’s about 4 boys on the cusp of adulthood.

The teenager delights in the filthy language and the low brow comedy.

The 33 year old watches on with a mixture of nostalgia and sadness.

Nostalgia for the days when he was an awkward teenager and sadness because he’s experienced the harsh reality of growing apart. He longs for the days when hanging out with your best friends for long periods of time was so easy and so frequently.

The 13 year old giggling at the many words used for genitalia takes it for granted. He hasn’t yet suffered the pains of trying to organize a single phone call, let alone a meet up, when there are multiple times zones to consider, with those who aren’t good at replying, with the scatter brain friend, and the time constraints of a parent.

It’s true when they say youth is wasted on the young.
