Path of least resistance

There’s a scenario that I see happening a lot in tag rugby.

Where one team is up by a lot at halftime let’s say it’s seven nil.

Then the team on top all of a sudden loses the massive lead and desperately tries to hang on while the underdogs mount a great comeback.

I think it’s a sign of humans and their love of the path of least resistance.

When it’s nil nil, they have to prove themselves and win the game.

When it’s seven nil, they feel the game is over and it’s time to do the bare minimum.

That’s where the trouble comes in because then the other team who have nothing to lose, score a few points, come back into the game and make for a tense final few minutes.

A scenario where the losing team has everything to play for, they have the momentum, and the visions of a glorious comeback in their sights.

Whether as the winning team are desperately trying to hold on to their lead.

Fear and panic is driving the show for them as they feel it would be mortifying to lose this game.

What’s more it’s tag rugby so most people have signed up for fun rather than elite sport so the message of ‘Go out and put the foot on the neck to finish the game off‘ doesn’t go down well but it’s probably the message that is needed.
