Walking around London you’re exposed to so many statues and I can’t help but wonder if there is supposed to be a hierarchy?
Are we supposed to remember some more than others?
Some statues have one simple easily climbable plinth.
Then others have two levels and artwork in the plinth.
Then there’s ones that are put in such an awkward place that they have to rearrange the roadworks and build a roundabout around it.
Does height mean more importance?
Is the one that’s as tall as a building more or less important than the one with a fountain and gold plated angels around it?
You wonder are the people commissioning these statues trying to convince us that the more elaborate the statue the less this person should be forgotten.
