Conversation gap filler

The conversation was passing me by.

Which I didn’t mind, it was a table of 9 and I prefer not to address more than 2 people at once.

Then all of a sudden there is a lull in the conversation as the chatty folk seem to have run out of things to say.

And I get asked a question about my trip to Waterford.

And I thought, look at that, they’re interested in me!

I give a lengthy answer, to which the questioner listens and then turns to their neighbour and says remember our trip to Waterford and the chatty folk pick it back up.

They weren’t genuinely interested, they wanted to tick the box, I engaged Tom and find another subject for the extroverts to use.

I wasn’t that bothered but thought it was an interesting human behaviour.
