Pain is a great motivator.
Pain will get you moving and taking action.
The trouble is when you’re making decisions just to avoid the short term pain.
For example if you’re sure medicine is not your calling then by all means quit.
But if you’re quitting just because this last essay is tough then you’re about to throw away years of progress and thousands of euros for a tiny surmountable obstacle.
I think when dealing with people reacting to short term pain it’s important to widen their perspective.
Yes it sounds like a toxic workplace but how will we pay the mortgage if you quit?
I think the sweet spot is to use the short term pain as motivation to transition into the long term solution faster.
For example the injured player finds it agonizing to sit in the stands watching his team play without him. Now that pain can be a great excuse for wallowing in self pity, or it could be great fuel for his rehab.
