Internal Caves

Imagine inside you, there are caves.

Inside those caves live exiled versions of your past self.

In the small cave far away is the 11 year old you who experienced his first ever heartbreak.

In the slightly bigger oval shaped cave lives the 17 year old you who got stage fright and stood paralyzed in front of a crowd.

And in the dark cave closest to us is that really hurtful comment you got in a feedback form.

For some reason or other, whether you didn’t have the time or the know how to process the pain, these exiles formed and found homes in these internal caves.

And the path to recovery is to coax them out and give them the care and attention they require to heal.

At least that’s how I understood the process from Martha Beck’s books.
