Ambition or family

Just watched Jay Kelly last night and whilst I thought it was good it felt familiar.

A man reflects on whether his choice of ambition or family was the right one.

There seems to be so many of these.

Other similar movies that spring to mind include: It’s a Christmas Carol, Spirited, Jobs, Click, and It’s a Wonderful Life.

Then you can look to the real world and it sounds like the following men chose superstardom over family: John Lennon, Anthony Hopkins, Tom Brady, and Sir Alex Ferguson.

It seems Hollywood has hit on a rich vein of content.

And I think the reason why it’s so commonplace is down to gender roles.

Men are encouraged to rule the world and women are pushed to become homemakers and mothers.

That’s why it’s rare to find female examples of this story.
