Comedy can be as simple as tension and release.
Take for example, this interview with Henrik Larsen.
When you watch the below clip you might think that the answer was funny but it didn’t warrant the enormous reaction that it got.
But when you watch the entire interview (here) you see that what immediately preceded the ‘boring’ answer was a heartfelt and sad answer about the loss of his father.
Which brought a more serious atmosphere than I think those present were comfortable with.
That I think enhances the reaction to the ‘boring’ answer, because while it was unexpected, it was also a release of a lot of tension.
