I think weddings are one occasion that the audience are expected to tolerate more cringe than usual. And you can't blame the happy couple. It's their day, their moment. They're likely only going to have this once in their life and the norm is to err on the side of sappy rather than cold.

Early morning observing
There's something serene about being a non-participating observer of early morning commuting. Like you're an alien studying the human race with a clipboard. The sun is providing a really nice shade of light, there's a hustle and bustle of human life streaming through the streets but you've found a safe haven away from the dangerously … Continue reading Early morning observing
Zen job
I have never felt more in the presence of everyday Zen Buddhism when I hear someone say they're ready for the worst. Like take for example jobs. If someone said they don't care about their job at all, I would say they are lazy and probably do the bare minimum at work. But if someone … Continue reading Zen job
Cherish houses on fire
At some point in childhood you figure out that not all friends are created equal. With some people you just seem to get on like a house on fire and with others it's like drawing blood from a stone. In some scenarios you have to make do. Like if you're at a summer camp. You know … Continue reading Cherish houses on fire
Unsportsmanlike conduct
I think it's the insecure competitor that resorts to unsportsmanlike conduct. They're not confident they're going to win on effort and skill alone so they employ dirty tactics. Furthermore, they have to win. They can't accept not winning because that means they'll be a failure. I think the best resolution to someone saying outrageous things … Continue reading Unsportsmanlike conduct
Fundamental misunderstanding
You wouldn't go to a library, cinema, or rock gig to have a deep meaningful conversation with your best friend. These are not the venues for it. I say this because yesterday I went to the lake side for some peace and quiet only to find a rock band screaming their heads off. What's more, … Continue reading Fundamental misunderstanding
Conscious black outs
Do you ever see those movies where a character is prone to blackouts? They wake up with no idea where they are and how they got there. I see a similarity in people with their phones. Someone else walks into the room where they've been alone and it jolts them awake from the scrolling. "Oh … Continue reading Conscious black outs
Youth is wasted on the young
A 13 year old boy and a 33 year old man are watching a TV show together. It's about 4 boys on the cusp of adulthood. The teenager delights in the filthy language and the low brow comedy. The 33 year old watches on with a mixture of nostalgia and sadness. Nostalgia for the days … Continue reading Youth is wasted on the young
Teaser and revelation
There is the teaser and the revelation. Together they are very powerful. Both are used to great effect when the news is good. As soon as the other hears the teaser that there's good news their excitement goes into overdrive and they can't wait to get to the revelation stage to find out what the … Continue reading Teaser and revelation
Changing people
I think first and foremost you shouldn't be looking for major surgery. That will only lead to frustration. Secondly I think the best change happens when the individual is motivated to change themselves. Otherwise you'll just be nagging and they'll be resenting. Thirdly I think if you want someone to make a minor change and … Continue reading Changing people
