The lame excuse

I think the lame excuse often hides something that cannot be mentioned. Because to utter those words would be to expose a side of us we're not comfortable with showing. Or maybe we don't even know yet why we're acting so weird.

They should act thus

I think I was getting bent out of shape because I had ideas about how they should be acting which I didn't know about. Unbeknownst to me I had created norms, behaviours, and standards for that person and got mad when they didn't obey my unwritten rules.

Knowing is not enough

It's not enough to just know it. I daresay every smoker knows that smoking is bad for them. I daresay every obese person knows that sugar, salt, and fat are all bad for them. But they don't stop. If true change is going to happen then pain and emotion have to be involved.
