Good enough old enough

Some people believe that there is a correlation between experience and performance. That in order to earn more responsibility or achieve great things you need to serve your time slowly one stage at a time.

These people dismiss youngsters for senior jobs because they believe the candidates don’t have enough experience, haven’t served enough time or aren’t mature enough.

For example in order to qualify to be the president of Ireland candidates have to be at least 35 years old.

This cohort would subscribe to the Alan Hansen mindset (talking about football at the time) of:

“You can’t win anything with kids”

The basis of this belief is that age is the primary driver of high performance.

Then there are others who follow the Matt Busby mindset of:

“If you’re good enough you’re old enough”

And examples of these can be found in all walks of life:

• Billie Eilish is 17 years old with a hit single

• Mark Zuckerberg was 19 years old when he started Facebook

• Kylian Mbappe was 19 years old when he won the world cup with France last summer

Based on the success of the three names above it appears that the market shares the same mindset as Matt Busby and doesn’t care what age you are, if you’re good enough you’re old enough.
