Shaming compliance

Often times you see a group use shame as a tactic for compliance.

Those attending make those not attending feel guilty.

It can be quite effective but the problem is that this tactic is inherently negative.

You can’t be sure if people are participating of their own volition or simply to avoid the shame from the majority.

I think a positive alternative to this is indifference.

The non shaming group doesn’t chase people, or use guilt trips.

They don’t need you to attend, they’re going to go ahead anyway, it’s up to you if you want to join.

They take the attitude of:

“We’re only going to hang out with people who want to hang out with us”

And paradoxically it works, maybe it’s reverse psychology or something but it feels a lot better then being shamed by a group.
