Promises – so much easier when the promisor and the one fulfilling the promise are the same person.
One should exercise extreme caution when making promises for others to fill.
It assumes the other person both wants to do it and can do it.
Not only is this act based on two assumptions but it also forces the other person into an awkward position.
Because what if fulfilling the promise means doing the impossible? What if it means working overtime or tripling someone’s work load?
The expectations are already set and for the fulfiller to say ‘no’ they have to stand up for themselves (potentially risking confrontation) and let someone down. Two things that the majority of people want to avoid at all costs.
