In the book ‘Grand slam’ they tell a story of how a young Rob Kearney, fresh into the squad (Ireland senior rugby), had the courage to voice an unpopular opinion. He had the bravery to highlight an issue no one had spoken of before.
That took place in 2008.
Since then Rob has gone on to become one of Ireland’s greatest fullbacks.
And I think the two points are related.
Despite the fact that it was an uncomfortable task, despite the strong possibility of a backlash, despite the fact that he was brand new to this team, Rob found the courage to do what he felt was best for the cause.
He tapped into an important aspect of leadership that he built on for the rest of his career.
Every cause needs someone who cares enough to be courageous.
