Develop or replace Karen

You have a weak link on your team.

It’s obvious really. It’s Karen.

So the question for you is – Do you look to replace or develop her?

I think people choose to replace because it’s quick and easy and people avoid developing because who knows how much and time and effort it’s going to take?

But I’d like to challenge the assumption that development is going to take forever. Yes it will take consistent effort and patience but not that much if the student is enrolled.

I think if Karen shows up of her own accord, then on some level she wants to be here.

I also posit that nobody likes making mistakes, even Karen.

So I think if you offered Karen a helping hand she would welcome it and she would put in the effort to learn.

The real question is – are you willing to help her?

Bonus thoughts:

Why don’t people like Karen ask for help?

Well maybe it’s never occurred to them to ask for help? Maybe they didn’t know others could help? Maybe they don’t feel this environment is safe enough to request advice? Maybe they can’t find the courage to ask for pointers?
