Michael Bungay Stanier recommends taming your advice monster and I agree.
I think unsolicited advice doesn’t take as well as solicited advice. Furthermore I think probing questions that let the ‘patient’ come up with the answer themselves will resonate most of all.
Having said that I think the biggest challenge to taming one’s advice monster is – those who like the scenic route to success.
The people who don’t ask for help and love learning things the hard way. These people in my mind will tempt your advice monster like no other.
I think the trick is to let them fail.
Offer your help of course, but don’t force it on them.
Turn a blind eye if you have to, but whatever you do, don’t let your advice monster loose on them!
