I want the ball!

After playing tag rugby for a few years I have found that, when the game is on the line, there are players who scream for the ball and there are players who shy away.

I think this comes down to people’s aversion to failure.

Nobody wants to be held responsible for losing their team the game, that’s why so many go quiet, but the screamers have found a way to deal with it.

They can live with the idea of ruining their team’s only chance of winning the game.

The screamers can’t guarantee success but they are willing to step up anyway, and while they do they hold in their minds opposing thoughts (Seth Godin’s great turn of phrase):

“This might work, this might not work”

The more the screamers fail, the more practice they get and the more practice they get the higher their chances are of avoiding failure.
