Brigerton’s tweaks

The Netflix show Brigerton has all the hallmarks of 19th century Britain.

It has the vernacular, the dress sense and the societal norms to name a few.

But importantly it never explicitly says that it is 19th century Britain which allows the show’s makers some wiggle room to cater to today’s audience with subtle updates.

For example the music played in the background is classical/instrumental versions of modern pop songs (listen out for ‘Thank you, next’ by Ariana Grande in the first episode).

Another example is casting people of colour in position of status such as royalty and Dukes.

Which certainly never would have happened in 19th century Britain but today’s audiences have very different views of racial integration.

So this show isn’t for the fact checkers or history buffs.

It’s for those who enjoy the escape of a period piece with the positivity of racial inclusion.
