“You already know what you’re going to do”
That’s what the counsellor in Fleabag kept repeating to the main character.
“You already know what you’re going to do”
And I think there’s something to that.
Despite coming up with perfectly rational reasons not to, have you ever felt drawn to a course of action?
I think what the counsellor is getting at is that you’ve already decided what you’re going to do it’s just a matter of justifying it to yourself now.
And it’s this justification that can take a while as you try and persuade the anxious and fearful side of you.
It’s interesting isn’t it?
That some part of you (most likely your unconscious) has already made the decision, maybe even instantly, but the agony and torture comes from developing the rational explanation for yourself and others.
