Securing a place in the VIP section is less exciting if you find out that anyone and everyone can enter and leave whenever they please.
With no barriers to entry it’s no longer a Very Important Person section but an Any Ole Person area.
The fun and excitement comes from the exclusivity that’s what makes you feel special.
But what if you weren’t looking for exclusivity for yourself but for your work?
In that case I think of creations like ‘The Big Moo’.
A book produced by Seth Godin, but contributed to by 30 authors including himself.
You can imagine the excitement of the lesser known authors getting the call from Seth to produce a book together.
Then the disappointment when they find out Seth called 28 other authors too.
Why would this one author who is used to getting 100% share of a book settle for 1/30th?
I think they contributed because 1) it was for charity and 2) it was a chance to have their work displayed alongside respected names like Tom Peters, Malcolm Gladwell and Dan Pink.
Yes the book may be lacking some exclusivity but your work will be in good company.
Being the only one in the VIP section isn’t the only way to gain status
