Audience assumptions

Some of the best movie twists come from preying on an audience’s assumptions.

A cripple can’t be the bad guy – Usual Suspects.

Fathers of good guys are also good – Star Wars.

Of course Brad Pitt is real – Fight Club.

The filmmakers probably have great fun leading the audience astray.

It’s not a good twist if the audience can see it coming and the audience is only with the characters for a few hours so they have to make some assumptions.

I think it’s a good thing there aren’t intermissions any more. As it gives the audience less time to correct their assumptions.
