‘It’s just a game’
Another way of saying – ‘I don’t get it. I don’t understand why you’re getting so worked up about this. From where I’m standing this is a trivial matter.’
Similar sayings include:
‘You flew all the way to Italy… for a dress?!?’
‘But why didn’t they just hop on the Eagles and take the ring straight to Mordor?’
‘They all look good, will you just pick one!’
‘I could’ve done that (specific to modern art)’
‘You spent £300 on a haircut?!?’
I think when someone says ‘its just a game’ they’ve failed to fully empathise with the other person.
Clearly this is more than just a game to these people.
They fly halfway around the world to attend matches, they get the team’s logo tattooed onto themselves, and they agonise over transfer news and squad selection.
So yes, to you and me it’s just a game but to them it’s a way of life.
