I think the problem with doomsday plans is that they’ve got the word doom in it and that word invariably attracts the word gloom quickly followed by disaster and chaos.
I think at the heart of over reliance is an unwillingness to contemplate the potential bad times.
Even thinking about letting my favourite colleagues go is depressing can’t we find something else to talk about?
What if we called it something else?
What if we called it the ‘Thank god we started saving!’ fund or the ‘I’m so glad we can keep our jobs I know so many people who have lost theirs’ plan.
If the possibility of your only income stream drying up is too unsettling then let’s imagine the gratitude you will feel at having a source of revenue as the world crashes down around you.
