In tag rugby the short kick to oneself is extremely hard to defend.
There are only a few who can do pull it off on demand and it’s no coincidence that they are all on the national team.
What I find interesting is that anyone can learn this skill.
You don’t need a coach to teach you how to do it, there’s no right style, you just need to dedicate the time to be good at it.
But the select few remain in demand because acquiring this particular skill has great barriers to entry.
It takes a lot of time and effort to perfect the skill.
The chances of it going wrong are huge.
It will most likely take a few years of embarrassing attempts and triggering groans from your teammates as you lose possession yet again before you can pull it off.
It’s somewhat paradoxical in nature – if you want to be one of the very best you have to look bad for a long period of time
