Phil’s embarrassment

The majority of those who watch Modern Family will proclaim their love for Phil Dunphy and I think part of the appeal is the comfort with which he lives in his own skin.

He has a childlike spirit and he doesn’t let the judgement of others stop him from acting it out and having fun.

Regularly his fellow characters cringe at his antics and deny any affiliation with him but as a viewer you can’t help but smile as you watch Phil have a great time without caring who may be laughing at him.

Some might be deeply mortified to dress up in costume to a wedding but not Phil, he goes all out, putting on an accent and creating a fictional background for himself all the while having the time of his life.

Some men might deny and repress any cheerleading experience but not Phil, he announces it proudly.

He seems to be devoid of shame and rarely embarrassed.

I don’t think it’s a lack of awareness. I think he chooses to be woefully ignorant about the judgement of others.

As he says in one episode:

“I know people think I’m crazy. It’s just more fun believing even when no one else does. Anyone can be a doubter”
