Insecure in silence

I’ve read/heard somewhere that the insecure can’t handle the lulls of conversations.

They equate silence with awkwardness and feel an overwhelming urge to fill it.

I can see some merit in that statement but also what about the benefits of contributing and spending your time well?

Are you really going to get all dressed up to meet your mates that you haven’t seen in a while to just sit there? Telling everyone with your muted presence that you’re really secure.

Let’s say you’re sat on the edge of a conversation next to someone you don’t know.

A case could be made that your time would be better spent getting to know the person beside you rather than just waiting for the conversation to come your way.

Imagine you found out that the person you had been sitting beside all night was your favourite author … only when you got home.

You could’ve been discussing your favourite book with its creator but instead you sat there thinking you were better than everyone.

I hypothesize that the middle ground between talking out of insecurity and making the best of a situation is if you can comfortably sit in the silence but you decide you’d prefer to socialise.

Your chatting isn’t a reaction to fear but a conscious choice on how to spend your time.
