Understanding before selling

To further my hypothesis that one must understand the plot before they can rave about a story, I think this is true because of the inevitable discussions that follow.

People like to talk about novels & movies and people often ask what your favourite movie is.

If you say Interstellar there’s a good chance you’ll get a reply like:

‘oh I didn’t understand what happened in that movie at all, can you explain it to me?’

Now your understanding of the film is going to be tested.

‘How did Matthew McConaughey get into the bookshelf and who put him there?’

‘Eh … they did’ (does that count as an answer?)

‘Yeah who’s they?’ (oh you’re in trouble now!)

Or possibly people don’t like to say Interstellar is their favourite movie just for the visuals.

Maybe they get judgemental looks with that answer.

I personally think selling something is made a lot harder when you don’t have all the answers.
