Contrived moments

“There’s no such thing as a bad idea Morty, it’s about execution”

To continue fleshing out this theory I find so interesting, if we take ‘proper’ execution to be characters presented with an abundance of obstacles and they overcome them in believable and cunning ways (eg. Rick & Morty) then I think we can consider the opposite to be contrived moments and convenient plot coincidences.

Now I’m a big Star wars fan, I love the movies, but two examples spring to mind.

The design flaw of the Death Star and Luke’s journey to find Yoda.

Family Guy do a hilarious scene highlighting the ridiculousness of the Death Star’s weakness and you can watch the clip here:

Now for Luke finding Yoda.

All he has to go off is “go to the Dagobah system”

For those of you unfamiliar with space terms, a system denotes a group of planets. For example our system is called the solar system and it includes 8 planets.

Now, not only does Luke pick the right planet in the Dagobah system first time but he also miraculously lands within 100 yards of where Yoda lives.

Like what are the odds of that?

He didn’t even land on the planet’s equivalent of China and have to travel to the planet’s equivalent of the US.

He landed on Yoda’s doorstep!

Now Star Wars fans might argue that the force was pulling him there but as an objective audience member, the absurd ease with which Luke found Yoda considering the maddeningly vague directions makes for a convenient plot moment.

Now I’m still able to enjoy the film and I’m still a big fan of the film but to help us define ‘proper’ execution, we can consider this instance an example of ‘improper’ execution.
