I’d say the waiters at the Shelbourne can spot a voucher user from a mile away.
The excitement must radiate off them.
It’s like they’ve won a competition or successfully snuck into the VIP section of a concert.
They’re trying to hide that they don’t belong but their nervous energy ensures they stand out.
I think the excitement comes from the glimpse into a lifestyle, from the experience of being upper class for an afternoon, from the fun of pretending you have more money than god!
After all, it’s fun to pretend and some need a little help from their surroundings to boost their imagination.
So I think it was a good idea for posh fancy places to become less exclusive.
I think there’s a good demand from the middle class for a taste. Just a tiny sample of what it’s like to have more money then sense.
I’d say it’s fun for the waiters too.
To see a couple squealing with delight at ordering a €100 bottle of champagne rather than the jaded aristocrat who expects nothing less than the €1,000 bottle of Bollinger every time.
